In August 2019, Mogadishu held its fifth annual book fair, bringing together storytellers, writers, artists and performers from across East Africa.
Across Somalia, nearly 3 million children are out of school, which means they have less opportunities and will find it more difficult to climb out of poverty. USAID's Alternative Basic Education programme is working to provide Somalia's children with the basic education that they need to build a better life for themselves.
In October 2018, the first Technology Summit was held in Mogadishu, Somalia. Over 1000 people took part in panel discussions, start-up pitches and networking events, helping to fuel solutions to the country's development problems.
In December 2018, under the UN's Joint Programme on Local Governance and Decentralised Service Delivery (JPLG), the former Mayor of Bethlehem, Vera Baboun, visited Somalia to advocate for the inclusion of women and young people in local governance.
