Sanaa... On the Night the Floods Swept Everything Away
Unprecedented floods in Sanaa, Yemen, caused severe damage to public and private properties, sweeping away homes, cars, and street vendors in areas east and south of the capital. Citizens like Yusuf Al-Jaidi and Hajj Mohammad Massad experienced significant losses, with water levels rising gradually and flooding streets and homes. The poor infrastructure and the location of neighborhoods in the path of torrents exacerbated the situation. Residents, including Mahmoud Subaih, a displaced person from Al Hudaydah, faced additional hardships due to the floods. Local efforts to mitigate the damage, such as those by Abdulwahed Al-Faras, were overwhelmed by the scale of the disaster.
The Marginalized... How Will They Face Coronavirus?
In Yemen, particularly among the marginalized communities, there is a severe lack of basic facilities to combat the coronavirus, such as access to water for handwashing. These communities, already heavily impacted by war and its consequences, live in dire conditions with inadequate housing, sanitation, and healthcare. The marginalized are at higher risk of COVID-19 due to discrimination and barriers to social services and information. The National Union for the Marginalized in Yemen is currently not taking any measures to address the pandemic, according to a statement from an office director in Sanaa.
