The Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Usman Yusuf, has been directed by President Muhammed Buhari to proceed on administrative leave starting November 5, following allegations of fraud and mismanagement. The directive was issued in a letter from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, signed by permanent secretary Olusegun Adekunle. The leave is to ensure an unimpeded investigation into the accusations. During Yusuf's absence, Mr. Ben Omogo will oversee NHIS operations. A seven-man panel has been established to investigate the allegations and must report back within two weeks. The committee will also explore the causes of strained relations between Yusuf and the NHIS Governing Council. Yusuf had faced similar allegations in 2016, which resulted in a previous suspension.

Reduce Exorbitant Fees – Teacher Trainees

01 Oct 2018  |  Modern Ghana
The Teacher Trainees' Association of Ghana (TTAG) has raised concerns over the high fees charged to students at colleges of education for the first semester of the 2018/2019 academic year, despite the exclusion of feeding fees. Attempts to discuss fee reductions with the Conference of Principals of the Colleges of Education (PRINCOF) have been unsuccessful. The Minister of Education stated that the fees have not been approved by Parliament. TTAG advises students to halt fee payments until further notice. Additionally, TTAG urges the Ghana Education Service to release postings for newly trained teachers by the end of October and calls on the National Teaching Council to release licensure examination results by mid-October.

03 Jul 2017  |  Modern Ghana
Samuel George Nartey, a National Democratic Congress MP, is criticized for dismissing calls for an investigation into a bribery scandal involving the National Lottery Authority and the Parliamentary Finance Committee. The article argues that the refusal to investigate because the amendment to Act 722 was not passed is flawed logic. It highlights the violation of parliamentary protocol and the law by the committee members accepting money for work already compensated through salaries and allowances. The author emphasizes the need for Ghanaian democracy to establish a proper lobbying system distinct from Western practices and for parliamentarians to adhere to a code of ethics that rewards hard work.
