Trade war erupts as Canada retaliates against Trump with huge new tariffs
Canada will impose retaliatory tariffs on about US$20 billion of American goods, affecting more than 700 products, with rates of up to 50% beginning September 8. The measures follow the Trump administration’s decision to levy 50% tariffs on Canadian goods after trade talks collapsed. Prime Minister Mark Carney said the US sought to undermine Canada’s automotive, steel and aluminium industries and rejected demands affecting French-language and cultural protections. Ottawa also announced C$7.5 billion in support for affected workers and businesses, while warning that the tariffs could raise costs and further disrupt deeply integrated US-Canadian supply chains. Donald Trump threatened additional duties and urged Canada to comply, escalating the political dispute.
Man charged with murder after woman dies in devastating house blaze
Pawel Kulpa, 34, has been charged with murder, eight counts of attempted murder and arson with intent to endanger life after a fire at a house on Berkeley Avenue in Hounslow, west London, on August 19. A woman died in hospital and another remained in a life-threatening condition, while six men and one woman were discharged with minor injuries. Kulpa is due to appear at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on August 25. The Crown Prosecution Service said proceedings are active and urged the public not to share information that could prejudice the defendant’s right to a fair trial.
