Plane tilts 44 degrees when 'tired' pilot tried to rush landing
An Aer Lingus Airbus A320 carrying 146 passengers banked 44 degrees during an aborted approach from Faro to Dublin in January 2025, after the crew attempted to lose altitude while arriving too high and too fast. The commander told investigators he had slept poorly and may have been tired. Disconnecting the autopilot and manually extending the speed brakes contributed to degraded situational awareness, while the aircraft twice fell below its recommended minimum speed and briefly exceeded its cleared altitude. Automatic low-speed protection helped the crew recover, and the plane landed safely after a second approach. Aer Lingus subsequently prohibited orbit manoeuvres during approaches except in training and advised pilots to go around whenever a safe landing is uncertain; the Air Accident Investigation Unit issued no further recommendations.
