Man shot during chip shop run in 'mistaken identity' incident
An innocent man, David Forbes, was shot in the legs outside his home in Croxteth after being mistaken for a gang rival by Daniel Lawless, who had displayed the shotgun to friends shortly before the attack. CCTV captured Lawless arming himself, approaching Forbes and firing at close range. Forbes suffered severe long‑term injuries and required multiple surgeries. Lawless, whose record includes previous violent offences, admitted wounding with intent and possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life. A judge sentenced him to 18-and-a-half years in prison plus four years on licence, citing the seriousness of the attack, the defendant's criminal history and the lasting harm to the victim.
