Springburn Boy Who Rose to Become Chaplain to the Queen Dies
The Rev Charles Robertson, who died aged 85, is remembered for a distinguished ministry in the Church of Scotland, particularly at Kiltearn and Edinburgh’s Canongate Kirk. Born in Springburn, Glasgow, he became a respected community leader, campaigned successfully to preserve access during construction of the A9, and helped prevent the Canongate from closing. He served as chaplain to numerous military, charitable and civic institutions and as Chaplain to the Queen in Scotland from 1991 to 2010. Robertson, who was also recognized with the LVO, is survived by his wife Alison and their three children.

Deirdre Rosebery, the Dowager Countess of Rosebery, is remembered for spending seven decades preserving and enhancing Dalmeny House and its significant collections, including artworks, French furniture, Burns memorabilia and rare historical objects. She also played an influential role in Scottish charitable and cultural life, supporting Girlguiding Scotland, Scottish War Blinded and St Columba’s Hospice Care, while serving as a trustee of major Scottish museums and galleries. Born Allison Mary Deirdre Reid, she met Neil Primrose at the 1954 Edinburgh Fringe, married him the following year and later helped manage the Dalmeny estate after he inherited the Rosebery titles and properties. She is survived by their son Harry and four daughters.
