A small UK study involving about 180 former intensive care patients found encouraging early indications that EMDR therapy can reduce post-traumatic stress symptoms, including frightening memories, anxiety and insomnia. The EMERALD study was delivered through the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre in Southampton and involved hospitals in Southampton, Bournemouth and Poole. Researchers caution that a much larger national trial is needed to establish the treatment’s effectiveness and cost-effectiveness, with the long-term aim of incorporating it into NHS critical care recovery pathways.
