Cumbria PC given final warning over stalking investigation failings
PC Stuart Ayling received a four-year final written warning after a misconduct panel found that he inadequately investigated a woman’s reports of domestic abuse and stalking by her former partner. The panel said he failed to consider protective measures, provide safeguarding advice, gather evidence and recognize the escalating risk. The woman was seriously assaulted the following day, although the panel did not hold Ayling responsible for that assault. His conduct was judged misconduct rather than gross misconduct, with mitigating factors including positive character evidence and a lack of recent domestic-abuse training, but the panel cited high culpability and a significant lack of insight.

Cumbria Police carried out 3,748 stop and searches in six months
Cumbria Constabulary conducted 3,748 stop and searches between January and June 2026, with 70.3% ending in no further action and police action recorded in 871 cases. Arrests were the most common outcome, while controlled drugs were the main reason for searches. The data also shows substantially higher search rates per 1,000 residents for some ethnic minority groups, although the figures rely on small population counts and 2011 Census data. British Transport Police searches on railways are excluded.

Penrith man refused drink-driving sample after Kendal bike fall
Jadee Armstrong, 27, of Penrith, pleaded guilty after falling from his motorbike in Kendal and returning a positive roadside breath test. Prosecutors said he later deliberately refused to provide an evidential sample at Kendal police station. He also admitted using the motorbike without third-party insurance and driving without a licence. His solicitor cited Asperger’s, autism and ADHD as factors contributing to his frustration in custody. Sentencing was adjourned to Carlisle Magistrates’ Court, with a pre-sentence report ordered and an interim driving disqualification imposed.
