Europe breaks June heat record. Why is the weather becoming more erratic?
Europe experienced its hottest June on record following an early heatwave in May and continued extreme temperatures into July, reflecting accelerating climate change. Ocean warming and rapid Arctic ice loss are intensifying weather instability, with Europe heating faster than the global average and Russia warming 2.5 times faster than the rest of the world. Scientists warn that Arctic sea ice is likely to disappear at least once before 2050 under any emissions scenario. Rising ocean heat reduces the planet’s ability to moderate temperature swings, contributing to increased drought risk and wildfires, particularly in southern Europe.
