'Banning social media for young people will not be the magic solution we imagine,' says psychologist
Psychologist Candice Odgers argues that research does not support the claim that smartphones and social media are the primary causes of the youth mental-health crisis. Studies generally find very small or weak associations, which often disappear after accounting for factors such as trauma, family history, parental mental health, violence, economic instability, and political uncertainty. She warns that blanket bans may divert attention from these causes, push young people toward less regulated online spaces, and strip away privacy and parental-safety controls. Odgers supports stronger regulation, safer platform design, corporate accountability, and support for vulnerable young people both online and offline. She also emphasizes that social media can provide connection, support, creativity, and access to help, and says families should make age- and context-sensitive decisions about device use.
