Researchers on the Isle of Man are expanding efforts to understand the behaviour and distribution of endangered basking sharks, following a rise in local sightings. The newly formed Manx Shark Foundation, working with UK and island conservation groups, is analysing sighting records, conducting surveys and studying environmental factors such as sea conditions and prey availability. The project aims to address longstanding gaps in knowledge about regional shark species and build on previous conservation work to support future protection of sharks, skates and rays in Manx waters.

The project also seeks to address wider gaps in knowledge about sharks, skates and rays in Manx waters and to build on the island’s history of marine research following the closure of Manx Basking Shark Watch.

Jersey became the first part of the British Isles to receive Royal Assent for assisted dying legislation, prompting Isle of Man MHK Alex Allinson to express confidence that similar approval will follow for the Manx bill. After amendments requested by the UK Ministry of Justice were passed, Allinson aims to have the legislation signed at Tynwald’s final sitting in July, ensuring its protection until approval is granted. He emphasises that progress is not a competition and highlights growing acceptance of assisted dying across Jersey, the Isle of Man and the UK while noting ongoing divisions among medical professionals and campaigners.

A prolonged dry spell and continued heatwave conditions have led Isle of Man authorities to issue a high-risk wildfire warning, citing tinder-dry landscapes and minimal rain forecast. The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture urged the public to avoid barbecues, campfires, stoves and careless disposal of cigarettes or glass, and advised anyone spotting smoke or fire to move to safety and call emergency services.
