Households are advised to clear blocked outdoor drains connected to kitchen sinks by slowly pouring a mixture of boiling water and washing-up liquid into them. The method helps dissolve fat, oil and grease blockages, but should not be used in rainwater-only drains because chemical detergents can harm watercourses and wildlife. Plant-based detergent, vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, drain strainers, wiping greasy cookware and keeping drain covers clear are suggested as safer preventive measures.
