Picture: National Trust images reveal impact of dry weather
A decade-long restoration of the River Aller at the National Trust’s Holnicote Estate on Exmoor has helped wetlands, wildlife and livestock withstand prolonged drought in Somerset. Reconnected floodplains, natural channels and around 25 beavers retain water, support species and grazing animals, and reduce downstream flood risk. The National Trust says the project demonstrates the value of nature-based climate adaptation and is urging the UK Government to invest more heavily in similar schemes.

Windwhistle Primary School in Weston 'requires improvement'
Ofsted rated Windwhistle Primary School in Weston-super-Mare as requiring improvement after finding that disruption in leadership and staffing had harmed pupils’ learning and outcomes. Only 31% of pupils achieved the expected combined standard in reading, writing and mathematics over the latest three-year period, compared with 61% nationally, while absence and persistent absence were also well above average. New leaders have begun stabilising the school, improving behaviour, attendance and academic performance, and early years provision was judged to be at the expected standard. Safeguarding was effective, but inspectors said achievement, teaching, inclusion, leadership, attendance, behaviour and pupils’ wider development still needed attention.
