Idyllic landscape that inspired Wuthering Heights 'under threat from wind farms', local residents fear
Plans for 34 wind turbines, each around 200 metres tall, on Crow Hill in West Yorkshire have sparked opposition from residents, heritage advocates and Reform-led local authorities. Campaigners argue the turbines would damage the landscape associated with Emily Brontë and Wuthering Heights, threaten wildlife and peatland stability, and create substantial transport disruption in Colne through an estimated 200 additional HGV journeys per day. Calderdale Energy Park says Top Withens would retain its heritage significance, that ongoing surveys are shaping the design, and that the project could power about 198,000 homes. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero supports onshore wind as part of efforts to lower bills and improve energy security. A final decision is expected from the Secretary of State in spring 2028.
