Mali’s Bookshops Are Dying, but Literature Endures

Afrique XXI 10 jun 2026 French

Bamako’s formal book trade is shrinking as high import costs, poverty, pirated low-cost copies, online access and changing reading habits undermine sales. The closure of Magatte N’Diaye’s Autour du livre reflects a wider decline following the dismantling of the state-supported Librairie populaire du Mali; a 2018 study found that informal street sellers far outnumbered conventional bookstores. Writers and readers describe expensive publishing, weak editorial standards, limited school reading and inadequate public support, while emphasizing that bookshops and libraries remain vital spaces for learning and intellectual freedom. Despite the crisis, publishers and writers continue to support new talent and call for stronger schools, libraries, and adaptation to digital distribution.

Mali: The Press Confronts the Silence of Sources

International Journalists’ Network (IJNet) 15 abr 2025 French

Malian journalists are increasingly unable to obtain expert commentary because academics, analysts and opinion leaders fear arrest, harassment and retaliation for criticizing authorities. Television programs and newspapers are left without reliable sources, creating space for self-proclaimed commentators and web influencers to spread unsupported or false claims. The article cites examples involving misleading statements about military radar and the Russia-Ukraine war, as well as the detention of figures such as Étienne Fakaba Sissoko and Adama Ben Diarra. Press freedom is further constrained by insecurity, political instability and the six-month suspension of Joliba TV News by Mali’s High Authority for Communication after remarks by Issa Kaou Djim. Journalists are responding through source anonymity, abandoning some subjects and relying on specialist colleagues, but the overall climate is increasingly restrictive and damaging to reliable public information.

Education: INAM, a Successful Model of Inclusion

La Gazette du Sahel 2 dic 2024 French

The National Institute for the Blind of Mali in Bamako brings blind, visually impaired and sighted students together through adapted classrooms, Braille instruction and peer tutoring. Students and teachers describe strong mutual support, while the institute also offers boarding, sports, music and training for people who lose their sight later in life. Managed by the Malian Union of the Blind, INAM opened Mali’s only Braille library in 2023 with support from former students’ association Action-jeune. The institute still faces shortages of teaching materials, limited access to adapted documents, social stigma and inadequate infrastructure. Its leadership is calling for increased state funding, particularly to support the boarding system and special schools.
