The RSPCA has urged UK dog owners to treat extreme heat like a lockdown and pause walks until temperatures fall. The warning comes as amber heat health alerts remain in place across many regions and amid the UK’s fifth widespread heatwave of the year. Owners are advised to provide shade and fresh water, use pet-safe sun cream where appropriate, check animals regularly for flystrike, and never leave pets in cars or other enclosed spaces. The RSPCA also advises calling 999 if a dog is trapped in a hot car and contacting its emergency line when an animal is suffering cruelty, neglect, illness or injury. People are urged to follow NHS guidance to reduce their own heat exposure.

Milk should be kept sealed and stored at the back or on the middle shelf of the fridge, where temperatures are more consistent than in the door. Arla Foods advises freezing milk before its use-by or best-before date, transferring it to an airtight freezer-safe container, thawing it in the fridge for at least 24 hours and consuming it within a few days without refreezing. Dr Xand van Tulleken adds that people who use milk slowly should keep it in the main fridge because milk can contain harmful bacteria even when it smells normal.

Royal Mail reiterates that recycling bins are not acceptable Safeplace locations for parcel deliveries, advising customers to select secure, weatherproof areas out of sight. Posties may choose a Safeplace if the customer is absent, but only within Royal Mail’s guidelines. Items will not be left where they could be damaged, require a signature, or where security is inadequate. Royal Mail also provides safety advice for households with dogs to ensure safe delivery conditions.

Veterinary guidance highlights that dogs can suffer from pollen allergies, often showing symptoms different from humans, such as paw licking, scratching, skin redness and lethargy. PDSA vet Olivia Anderson‑Nathan advises owners to seek veterinary assessment to rule out other conditions and consider treatments including medication or food‑elimination trials. Pets with seasonal allergies should still be exercised, with recommended paw and muzzle cleaning after walks during high‑pollen periods.

A food specialist tested several avocado‑storage methods and found that keeping them in a cool, dark place produces the most predictable ripening and best texture, while a paper bag with fruit speeds ripening when needed. Refrigerating ripe avocados can extend freshness, and experts highlight their nutritional value and recommend serving them raw.
