Jersey States to discuss delaying new minister role
Jersey politicians are considering delaying the creation of a new minister for planning and regulation, a role proposed by Chief Minister Lyndon Farnham and for which Mark Boleat has been nominated. Deputy Tom Coles argues the proposal lacks detail on costs and staffing and conflicts with guidance recommending ministers oversee single departments. He contends existing delegated functions make the new role unnecessary and warns it would dilute accountability. The debate will take place in the States Assembly.

Jersey's new government - new faces, new tensions
Lyndon Farnham has appointed a ministerial team that blends experienced members with new figures, creating potential internal tensions despite greater ideological cohesion than in the previous term. Health Minister Tom Binet is expected to push for increased spending, placing him at odds with colleagues advocating fiscal restraint. Helen Miles, now Home Affairs Minister, is likely to counterbalance Binet’s influence. The emerging Value Jersey movement has gained seats and is positioned to shape policy, particularly through Economic Development Minister Gerald Voisin. Farnham has also proposed a new planning and regulation ministry led by Mark Boleat, whose reform ambitions may clash with Infrastructure Minister Jonathan Renouf’s regulatory approach.

New ministers in Jersey highlight States priorities
Ministerial candidates nominated by Chief Minister Designate Lyndon Farnham outlined their priorities during approval hearings in the States Assembly. Social Security Minister Elaine Millar said support for living wage proposals would depend on economic conditions, stressing the need for a strong economy to sustain wage increases. Home Affairs Minister Helen Miles indicated that the violence against women and girls taskforce may conclude its current work, with members integrated into community structures to ensure continued focus on safeguarding. Returning Health Minister Tom Binet highlighted severe shortcomings in digital connectivity across Jersey’s health services, noting the system had scored zero against international standards. Ministerial appointments are expected to be finalised on Tuesday.
