The June 20, 2023 primary races in New Kent County are highlighted by a contest for the Republican nomination for Commissioner of Revenue between incumbent Laura Ecimovic and newcomer Terry Cornelius. Ecimovic emphasizes her commitment to minimizing tax burdens and addressing growth, while Cornelius advocates for change and improved tax assessment methods. Janiya Washington represented Charles City at the Group 1A State Track and Field Championships held at James Madison University on June 3-4. She achieved her best performance in the 100-meter dash, finishing 11th with a time of 13.38 seconds. Washington also set a personal record in the 200-meter dash and competed in the 400-meter dash. Charles City’s Lady Panthers did not score in the event, and no boys from the school participated. Lancaster's boys and Auburn's girls won the state titles.

Ellis Branch of New Kent won the boys' triple jump at the Group 3A State Track and Field Championships with a leap of 46’6½”, defeating Markus White of Heritage. New Kent's boys' team finished tenth overall, with notable performances from Isaac Lamprecht and Ryan Wright. The girls' team had top ten finishes from Ara Buchman and Autumn Wallace but did not score in the competition. Tabb and Abingdon High School emerged as state champions in the boys' and girls' categories, respectively.

Isaac Lamprecht and Ryan Wright secured victories in the boys' 3200-meter run and pole vault, respectively, at the Group 3A Region A Championships, leading New Kent to a fifth-place finish. The New Kent Lady Trojans finished sixth, with notable performances including five third-place finishes. Tabb won the meet with 155.33 points for the boys and 129 points for the girls.

Charles City’s Lady Panthers finished tenth at the Group 1A Region A Outdoor Track and Field Championship, scoring six points. Janiya Washington had the best performance for the team, placing fourth in the girls’ 400-meter dash and qualifying for the state championship in multiple events. Jaela Smith also contributed points by placing fifth in the girls’ 300-meter hurdles. On the boys’ side, Ashton English earned a point by placing sixth in the boys’ shot put. The Northampton girls and Lancaster boys’ teams won the regional championships.

Terrence Doran Delaney, a 37-year-old man from Lanexa, has been sentenced to seven years in jail for drug distribution and illegal possession of a firearm. Delaney pleaded guilty to distributing a Schedule I/II drug, possessing a weapon as a nonviolent felon, and possessing a gun while in possession of a Schedule I/II drug. The charges stem from a June 2022 narcotics investigation where Delaney was found with cocaine and a .45-caliber Taurus handgun. The seven-year sentence is the mandatory minimum under state law.

Christopher Paul Perry of Providence Forge pled guilty to one count of possession of child pornography in New Kent Circuit Court, with five additional charges dropped. Perry admitted to downloading and deleting the images. Sentencing is scheduled for July 17. Other court matters included guilty pleas from Brian Kevin Carroll Jr. for drug possession, obstruction of justice, and DWI; Thomas Ray Walton for drug possession; and Gary George Wentz Sr. for drug paraphernalia possession, identification theft, and pretrial condition violations.

A Mechanicsville man, Christopher Russell Holt, has been indicted by a New Kent grand jury on multiple charges including DWI after a felony conviction, driving revoked, felony eluding, and felony destruction of property. The indictment alleges Holt attempted to flee officers and damaged a Lexus Sedan. Several other individuals were also indicted on various charges ranging from reckless driving to possession of drugs and weapons, felony eluding, and providing false statements.

New Kent's Gabrielle Butler and Ellis Branch secured victories in the girls' and boys' triple jump events, respectively, at the Bay Rivers District Track and Field Championships held on May 10. Butler also placed fifth in the 400-meter and 200-meter dashes, while Branch earned a bronze in the long jump. New Kent's Lady Trojans and boys' teams finished ninth and sixth overall, with Warhill's Lady Lions and Lions winning the championships.

Rickie Wooten Jr. won the boys' 110-meter hurdles, leading Charles City's boys' track and field team to a sixth-place finish at their home track meet. The Lady Panthers finished ninth overall, with Jaela Smith's fourth-place finish in the triple jump being their top performance. Lafayette's boys' team and King & Queen's girls' team won the competition.

A Fredericksburg man, Jules Jamar Stewart, has been indicted by a Charles City grand jury on a charge of DUI manslaughter for causing the death of Abbigail Breeding while driving intoxicated on August 23, 2022. Other indictments include Gary Lee Wade for malicious wounding and firearm use, and Traci Lynn Winkle for misdemeanor destruction of property.

New Kent’s School Board unanimously adopted a $46,075,167 budget for FY2023-24, with $42,914,660 allocated for general funds, $1,734,336 for school nutrition, $1,159,478 for school grants, and $266,693 for textbooks. Despite not receiving the full requested amount, an additional $600,000 was granted to help offset costs due to the county's rapid growth. The budget required $1.3 million in cuts, affecting various educational and support positions. Charles City County Administrator Michelle Johnson presented a $21.2 million budget to the Board of Supervisors, maintaining the tax rate and focusing on personnel hires and the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). A Providence Forge man, Richard Gene Wray Jr., has been sentenced to 14 months in jail for making a burn or bomb threat and misdemeanor destruction of property following a September 2022 incident.
