Thousands of books given away in drive to improve children's literacy
South Yorkshire will distribute 4,000 free books to children in Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield through the South Yorkshire Festival of Reading and the Mayor's Little Book Club. The initiative, led by Mayor Oliver Coppard, aims to improve children's access to books and encourage reading. National Literacy Trust figures show Yorkshire and the Humber has England's lowest proportion of children who own a book, while only 20.3% of children aged eight to 18 read daily in their free time. Although enjoyment of reading rose slightly for the first time in five years, participation remains near a 20-year low.

Sheffield club breaks silence after 'anti-fascist' protest at Restore Britain meeting
A Restore UK meeting featuring Rotherham grooming-gang campaigner Sammy Woodhouse drew an anti-fascist protest outside Crookes Social Club in Sheffield. The meeting proceeded with hired security and a police presence but attracted about 30 attendees, with one Restore member attributing the low turnout to dissatisfaction with branch organiser Mark Lomas rather than the protest. Sheffield Communities Against Racism and Fascism criticised the club for hosting the event, while general manager Maurice Champeau said the venue had consulted police and council licensing officials, had hired the room to a political party rather than organised the meeting, and would continue to uphold its apolitical policy and support freedom of speech. Staff subsequently received numerous direct and sometimes abusive complaints.
