Leeds nostalgia: The fascinating story of Lee Gap Fair
Lee Gap Fair in West Ardsley has a documented history stretching back more than 850 years. Its origins date to royal charters issued by Henry I in 1135 and Stephen around 1136, allowing fairs to be held annually in August and September. The event became known for horse trading and, during the Middle Ages, the trade in fleeces and woollen cloth. It was later named after Thomas Lee, a commissioner involved in valuing Nostell Priory before acquiring its lands after the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Archival photographs highlight the fair from 1908 through the 1960s, including travellers, horse trading and Welsh pony sales.

Former drug user to spend three days in a bathtub on Leeds City Square to transform lives
Chris Sylvester, founder of Leeds-based social enterprise Getting Clean, will spend up to three days in a bathtub in Leeds City Square from August 7 as part of the TUBTrap fundraising challenge. The campaign aims to raise £50,000 through soap sales, donations and public support for people affected by addiction, homelessness and the criminal justice system. If the target is reached, £20,000 will be donated to Forward Leeds for lived-experience recovery projects. Getting Clean employs people in recovery, makes natural soap and donates half its profits to addiction-related support.

Murder investigation launched after discovery of woman’s body in Leeds
Police launched a murder investigation after finding a 58-year-old woman with fatal injuries inside a flat at Cottingley Towers in Leeds late on July 24. A 52-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and remained in custody. Police said the incident was isolated, that they were not seeking anyone else, and appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to contact investigators.

Altofts: Cyclist dies after falling off bike
An elderly man in his 80s died at the scene after falling from his green Trek electric-assisted pedal cycle on Lock Lane in Altofts, near the Aire and Calder Navigation, on July 24. Four arrested following suspected Leeds drugs lab discovery
Four people—three men aged 46, 44 and 38, and a 36-year-old woman—were arrested on suspicion of money laundering and drug supply after West Yorkshire Police warrants uncovered a suspected illicit-medication laboratory on Whitehall Road in Leeds. Nine firearms were seized during a separate warrant on Farrar Lane. The suspects were bailed pending further inquiries, while police advised the public to avoid the sites and report suspicious activity or suspected drug dealing.

Paedophile convicted of 14 counts of rape after Leeds safeguarding investigation
A Leeds man, Paul Ben, was convicted at Leeds Crown Court of more than 40 offences, including 14 counts of rape and the creation of indecent images of children, involving five victims between 1998 and 2020. The investigation began when one victim came forward, leading police to identify four additional victims. Detectives praised the victims’ courage in providing detailed accounts and supporting the trial. Ben has been remanded in custody and is scheduled for sentencing on August 14.
