The Environment Agency has issued a draft decision to grant Europa Oil & Gas an environmental permit for a temporary gas exploration wellsite near Burniston on the North Yorkshire coast. The proposal, including a 125-foot rig and possible proppant squeeze well stimulation, was previously refused planning permission by the local council, and Europa plans to appeal. The EA says it must assess the permit independently under environmental legislation and is consulting the public until September 23. Supporters say the project could be conducted responsibly, create jobs and provide locally consumed gas, while opponents argue it would harm the heritage coast and do little to improve energy security or prices.
