EU proposes slowing down cuts to carbon emissions for businesses
The European Commission proposed easing the pace of emissions reductions under the EU Emissions Trading System by slowing the annual cap decrease and extending free emission permits from 2034 to 2038. Companies investing in decarbonisation would receive most free permits upfront. Some member states, including Poland, support further weakening of the rules, while Green lawmakers warn the changes would worsen climate impacts. The proposals require approval from EU governments and the European Parliament.
