Nonaxisymmetric modes of magnetorotational and possible hydrodynamical instabilities in the upcoming DRESDYN

25 Mar 2024  |  Physical Review Research
The study investigates the linear and nonlinear dynamics of nonaxisymmetric magnetorotational instability (MRI) in a magnetized Taylor-Couette flow of liquid sodium, as part of the DRESDYN project. It demonstrates that the highest achievable Lundquist and magnetic Reynolds numbers in the experiment are sufficient for the linear instability of nonaxisymmetric modes, although these numbers are typically higher than those for the axisymmetric mode. The research also analyzes the structure and scaling properties of the ensuing nonlinear saturated state, revealing that nonaxisymmetric MRI modes decay for lower Reynolds numbers but grow and saturate for higher Reynolds numbers, forming a turbulent boundary layer near the inner cylinder wall. The saturation amplitude of these nonaxisymmetric modes is significantly smaller than that of the axisymmetric MRI mode.

Nonlinear evolution of magnetorotational instability in a magnetized Taylor

17 Aug 2023  |  Physical Review Research
Magnetorotational instability (MRI) is a key mechanism for angular momentum transport in astrophysical disks, yet direct experimental evidence in laboratories remains elusive. This study builds on previous work by examining the nonlinear evolution and saturation properties of MRI in a Taylor-Couette flow with an axial magnetic field, using a pseudospectral code. The analysis covers extensive ranges of magnetic Reynolds number, Lundquist number, and Reynolds number, focusing on small magnetic Prandtl numbers typical of liquid sodium. Findings indicate that in the saturated state, magnetic energy and torque due to perturbations vary with these parameters, following specific scaling laws. These results are crucial for future comparisons with DRESDYN-MRI experiments to conclusively identify MRI in laboratory settings.
