Fishermen in Trabzon say 'Vira Bismillah': Colorful images from the season's first catch

Euronews 4 سبتمبر 2018 Turkish

Following the end of the fishing ban in the Black Sea, fishermen from Trabzon embarked on their first catch of the season, captured in images by photographer and video artist Atilla Bölükbaşı. The fishermen, who had been preparing to return to sea since April 15, had a successful catch, particularly of bonito, which is expected to be abundant this season, leading to generally lower fish prices. Ramazan Özkaya, Chairman of the Board of the Central Union of Aquatic Products Cooperatives, emphasized the importance of sustainable fishing practices and warned against overfishing. He also highlighted the need for regional fishing, legal adjustments to strengthen the sector, and deterrent penalties against illegal fishing during the ban period. The fishing industry contributes approximately 4 billion Turkish Lira to the economy annually and indirectly employs around 350,000 people.
