North Tyneside Council has temporarily stopped accepting fridges and freezers at its recycling centre because limited national specialist-processing capacity has created a backlog. Councillor Liam Bones warned that the suspension could encourage fly-tipping, while council officials apologized and said appliances should be stored safely until capacity is restored. Residents are also encouraged to use retailer take-back schemes; South Tyneside and County Durham continue to offer disposal options.

A petition with 2,410 signatures calling for the preservation of High Borrans outdoor education centre will be debated at North Tyneside Council’s next full meeting. The Labour-led council plans to close the Windermere-based centre by November, citing a £3m repair and investment requirement, declining school trips and dependence on subsidies. Campaigners, supported by Conservative councillor John Johnsson, want the closure paused while alternatives are explored, while the ruling Labour group says no credible, costed plan exists to make the centre financially sustainable and that taxpayers should not fund further delays.

North Tyneside Council apologised after 131 households reported receiving food waste caddies despite opting out of the first phase of collections. The council said the errors occurred during deliveries to more than 32,000 homes, that unwanted caddies could be returned or collected, and that there was no cost implication for sending them. Opposition councillor John Johnsson called for the council to establish whether opt-out information had been properly reflected in the delivery process.

North Tyneside Council says campaigners opposing the planned November closure of the High Borrans outdoor centre are offering false hope because they have not presented a funded plan to address more than £3m in repairs or end the centre's operating losses. The Save High Borrans Campaign, supported by councillors from several parties, the GMB Union, residents and the Friends of High Borrans charity, is seeking independent legal advice and may consider a judicial review. The council argues that declining use and available alternative providers justify the closure, while campaigners are asking for the decision to be reconsidered.

Reform UK won a Gateshead Council by-election in High Fell by five votes after a recount, following the resignation of councillor Danielle Cavanagh less than two weeks after her election. Lindsay Atkinson secured 564 votes to Labour candidate Kathryn Walker’s 559, narrowing Reform’s previous margin in the ward. Labour co-leader John Adams acknowledged the party’s need to rebuild. Reform retains overall control of the council, which now comprises 38 Reform, 13 Liberal Democrat, 12 Labour and three Green councillors. Cavanagh resigned to focus on her business, and Reform has pledged to cover the cost of the by-election.

Tributes were paid to former Tynemouth MP Sir Neville Trotter, who died aged 94. Gulf War veteran John Nichol praised Trotter for supporting his family during his captivity in Iraq, calling him a decent and dedicated public servant. Current MP Sir Alan Campbell also commended Trotter’s defence work and courteous manner. Trotter’s family remembered him as a devoted public servant, noting his knighthood and long service in regional roles.
