Awal Sheikh is an investigative journalist and climate reporter based in Khulna, Bangladesh. He reports on climate change, environmental degradation, public health, livelihoods and labour rights, with a particular focus on Bangladesh’s climate-vulnerable southwest coast and the Sundarbans. His reporting has examined salinity intrusion, water insecurity, climate-related health risks, displacement, river erosion, coastal livelihoods and the impacts of environmental change on vulnerable communities. He also works on data-driven and public-interest investigations, including stories at the intersection of climate, science, technology and society. Awal is a Khulna representative of The Business Standard and is also developing The Climate Monitor, an independent platform focused on investigative climate and data journalism. His work has received recognition including the Plan International Media Award 2025 and the UNICEF Meena Media Award 2023. He has been a Thomson Reuters Foundation Just Transition & Labour Rights Fellow and a finalist for the MIT Knight Science Journalism Program 2026–27.
