World's Oldest President Returns After Record Absence as Questions Swirl Over Who Was Running Cameroon
Cameroonian President Paul Biya returned to Yaoundé after spending a record 73 days abroad, mainly in Switzerland, amid persistent speculation about his health and who was managing the country. The ruling CPDM said he continued governing remotely and signing decrees, while opposition figures described an institutional vacuum and urged the Constitutional Council to declare the presidency vacant. Biya's return did not resolve questions about his capacity to govern, the absence of a vice president, or the country's succession arrangements.

Woman Who Came a 'Hair's Breadth' of Killing a Child Jailed to a Minimum of Six Years
Laura Docherty, 35, was sentenced in Scotland to a minimum of six years in prison for repeatedly giving a toddler unprescribed adult drugs between April 2021 and February 2023, causing seizures, cardiac events and loss of consciousness. The child nearly died during one incident at Edinburgh's children's hospital but survived after emergency treatment. Docherty was also given an Order for Lifelong Restriction, meaning she will not be automatically released after the minimum term, and a non-harassment order prohibiting contact with the victim. The judge condemned her conduct and her TikTok videos filmed during the trial, while the child's father said the verdict provided closure.

Residents Help Firefighters With Hosepipes, Buckets as Fire Tears Through Midlands
Wildfires across the West Midlands prompted residents to use hosepipes, buckets and improvised tools to help firefighters, although authorities urged people to evacuate and leave firefighting to emergency crews. Fires in Stourbridge and Castle Vale damaged or destroyed homes, injured at least two people and led to evacuations, while a separate major incident was declared in Warwickshire. The M6 was closed northbound because of smoke and repeated flare-ups, causing lengthy delays. Rest centres and temporary accommodation were arranged for displaced residents as emergency services faced stretched resources and high call volumes.

Bonnie Tyler's Classic Hit Surges 94% as Once-In-A-Generation Eclipse Crosses the UK
Bonnie Tyler's 1983 hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart” recorded a 94% increase in UK Spotify streams during the 12 August 2026 solar eclipse, along with a 14% rise worldwide. Several other eclipse-themed songs experienced even larger percentage increases, though Tyler's song had the biggest overall jump among the tracks examined. The eclipse, which obscured more than 90% of the Sun across much of the UK, prompted residents of Mumbles, Swansea, Tyler's former home, to sing the song in tribute following her death on 8 July 2026. The piece also revisits the song's creation, recording, chart success and distinctive music video, while noting planned funeral and tribute events in Swansea.

Under-18s and Lip-Syncing Banned as Eurovision Tightens Rules Ahead of Bulgaria 2027
The European Broadcasting Union has approved new Eurovision rules for 2027, raising the minimum performer age from 16 to 18 and requiring lead vocals to be performed live, while still allowing backing tracks that do not replace or strengthen the lead vocal. Winning countries will also no longer automatically receive hosting rights if conflict or security concerns make hosting unsafe, with the EBU able to commission an independent assessment and appoint an alternative host broadcaster. The measures follow broadcaster disputes over Israel's participation in the 2026 Vienna contest, which prompted several countries to withdraw. Security concerns have also delayed the announcement of Bulgaria's 2027 host city, with Burgas and Sofia competing to host. Canada is set to debut after CBC/Radio-Canada gained full EBU membership.

Brexit Forces 78-Year-Old Widow Out of Sweden After 21 Years of Residency
Joyce Thomas, a 78-year-old British widow who has lived in Sweden for 21 years, faces removal after missing the deadline to apply for a post-Brexit residence permit. Sweden’s Migration Agency rejected her explanation that she was unaware of the requirement, and a subsequent application under domestic immigration rules was also refused. Thomas is appealing with pro bono legal support and seeking humanitarian consideration based on her age, family ties, long residence and financial independence. British officials and campaigners argue that Sweden has applied the Withdrawal Agreement unusually harshly. About 2,500 British citizens have reportedly been ordered to leave Sweden since Brexit, which has a substantially higher refusal rate than other EU countries. Thomas’s appeal will determine whether she can remain near her family and her late husband’s grave.

£400M a Year From Small Fixes? Burnham Wages War on Daily Nuisances to Rack Up Big Savings for Consumers
Andy Burnham has announced an 'everyday fixes' package aimed at reducing recurring household costs, including bringing forward subscription reforms to January 2027. The proposed rules would require clearer subscription information, renewal reminders and easier cancellations, with ministers estimating up to £400 million in annual savings. The government also plans action against misleading 'pretend prices' and is considering a national Network Railcard, alongside a £2 cap on single bus fares in England and a VAT reduction on household electricity. Critics say the rail proposal may be only a temporary subsidy that fails to address the structural causes of high fares. The measures form part of Burnham's broader 10-year plan focused on living standards and everyday affordability.
