Fishguard's new social housing welcomes first residents
Wales & West Housing has completed Angorfa, a 12-apartment development for people over 55 on the former Ship and Anchor pub site in Fishguard. The affordable, energy-efficient homes include accessible layouts, shared gardens, solar panels and heat-recovery systems, and have been allocated mainly to local people on the housing register. Although residents previously criticised the development’s design and impact on the conservation area near listed buildings, housing officials and Councillor Pat Davies welcomed it as an important response to the shortage of suitable homes for older people in north Pembrokeshire.

Royal honour for RNLI beach lifeguard's Newgale rescue
RNLI lifeguard supervisor Matty McLeod is receiving a royal honour at Kensington Palace for rescuing Londoner Joanna Hicks from a rip current at Newgale Beach in July 2023. McLeod brought the unconscious swimmer ashore and began CPR with help from a nurse before paramedics arrived. The recognition coincides with Lifeguard Appreciation Day and the RNLI lifeguard service’s 25th anniversary; the service has saved 315 lives on Welsh beaches since 2008, including 164 in Pembrokeshire. Current and former lifeguards describe the service’s focus on prevention, water-safety education, training and community support.
