Olympic stadium turned into emergency shelter for dogs rescued from Greece wildfires
More than 110 dogs rescued from wildfires in Greece’s Attica region are being sheltered at the Megara Olympians Municipal Stadium, where volunteers and veterinarians are providing food, water and medical assessments. Some collared dogs may be reunited with their families. The fires, intensified by dry conditions and strong winds, have destroyed properties, threatened wildlife habitats and contributed to the loss of 42% of Attica’s woodland over the past decade. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said some burned forests, particularly Aleppo pine forests, can regenerate naturally, while authorities detained 33 people over suspected negligent or deliberate fire-starting.
