Glasgow university to review its hiring of plagiarism row professor Jason Arday
The University of Glasgow will review its appointment of Jason Arday, who worked there from January 2022 to March 2023, after he resigned as a Cambridge professor amid allegations of plagiarism and questions about other claims he made. Cambridge will continue investigating his appointment and tenure and review senior academic hiring and research-misconduct procedures. Academics, including Priyamvada Gopal, are calling for an independent and transparent inquiry rather than a university-led review. Arday denies wrongdoing, and a previous investigation by Liverpool John Moores University cleared him. The Metropolitan Police has also faced criticism over its handling of a related harassment report involving a Times Higher Education journalist.

Glasgow University to Review Its Hiring of Plagiarism-Row Professor Jason Arday
The University of Glasgow will review its 2022 appointment of Jason Arday after he resigned as a Cambridge professor amid allegations that he plagiarised his PhD thesis and misrepresented other achievements. Arday has defended his work, and Liverpool John Moores University previously cleared him of wrongdoing. Cambridge will continue investigating his appointment and tenure while reviewing its processes for hiring senior academics and handling research misconduct. Academics, including Priyamvada Gopal, are calling for an independent and transparent inquiry, while the Metropolitan Police has acknowledged mishandling a related harassment report.

Six-hour train services between London and Stirling running with no toilets
Lumo is operating some more-than-five-and-a-half-hour services between London Euston and Stirling without functioning onboard toilets. The operator has extended station stops, including at Preston, so passengers can use platform facilities, while one affected London departure was delayed by 58 minutes and terminated at Motherwell. Lumo and carriage refurbisher Alstom say they are investigating reliability and maintenance problems across the fleet. The services use refurbished Class 222 Meridian trains, which have also experienced toilet faults under East Midlands Railway. Lumo is privately operated on an open-access basis and is not covered by the UK government's planned renationalisation of franchised rail services.

Cairngorm residents say wildfire response 'too slow'
Residents of Nethy Bridge and surrounding Cairngorms communities say authorities were too slow to declare a major incident and organize evacuations during a wildfire that burned for 10 days. The fire spread across about six square kilometres, prompting evacuations, the deployment of more than 500 firefighters, helicopters and heavy machinery, and the creation of fire breaks. Scottish Justice Secretary Neil Gray defended the response, saying decisions were evidence-based and that available emergency resources had been committed, while additional military helicopter support was being sought. Residents were later allowed to return home, although concerns remained about possible re-ignition, poor communication, evacuation arrangements and the need for better wildfire contingencies.

Cairngorm residents say wildfire response 'too slow'
Residents of Nethy Bridge and surrounding Cairngorms communities say authorities acted too slowly during a wildfire that burned for 10 days and grew to cover about six square kilometres. They argue that a major incident should have been declared earlier, evacuation planning and communication were poorly organised, and local knowledge was overlooked. More than 500 firefighters, helicopters, bulldozers and firebreaks were deployed, while rain helped dampen the flames. The Scottish Government defended its evidence-based response and said available emergency and commercial resources had been committed, while Police Scotland later stood down the major incident and allowed residents to return home.
