Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony Sees King and Queen Emerge from Tardis
The 2026 Commonwealth Games opened at Glasgow's OVO Hydro with around 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories taking part in a ceremony celebrating Scottish culture, music, nature and Glasgow's hosting traditions. Sir Chris Hoy helped lead the event, while King Charles III and Queen Camilla arrived through a Tardis before the King formally declared the Games open. Performances included appearances by Tom Walker, KT Tunstall, Nathan Evans, Nina Nesbitt and Callum Beattie, alongside tributes to Glasgow's industrial and artistic heritage. Glasgow is hosting after Victoria, Australia, withdrew because of rising costs, with events scheduled across four venues over ten days.
