Lake District litter crisis as rubbish blights top beauty spots
Litter, discarded camping equipment and waste from barbecues are blighting popular Lake District locations, particularly the shores of Ullswater, Derwentwater and Buttermere during peak visitor periods. Research from Friends of the Lake District and Keep Britain Tidy indicates that a minority of visitors leave rubbish behind, while local authorities provide cleaning and reporting services but do not publish sufficiently detailed data to identify the worst postcode areas. Community litter picks and volunteer clean-ups are helping, but residents and campaigners say lasting improvement depends on changing visitor behaviour.
