Galopin Des Champs dead: Cheltenham icon dies in 'field injury' days after retirement
Irish champion jockey taken to hospital and meeting abandoned 'in interests of safety'
Irish champion jockey Dylan Browne McMonagle was taken to Drogheda Hospital after being thrown from Joseph O'Brien's horse Mosel during the opening race at Bellewstown. He was conscious when transferred, but the meeting was later abandoned after two further horses lost their footing on the wet surface, prompting jockeys, trainers and officials to conclude that continuing would not be safe. The incident overshadowed Bellewstown's 300th-anniversary celebrations and followed several serious jockey injuries at Killarney the previous week. McMonagle had entered the meeting after a period of notable success, including a 723-1 five-timer at the Curragh and a Group 2 victory in France.
