Scott's Grotto, Ware: Hidden 'Fairy Hall' Open for Torchlit Visits
Scott's Grotto in Ware, Hertfordshire, is a 260-year-old underground attraction built by Quaker poet John Scott. Its six chalk-cut chambers, decorated with shells, fossils, flints and coloured glass, are open for self-guided torchlit visits from April to September. The Grade I listed grotto survived surrounding housing development after East Hertfordshire District Council acquired it in 1974, and it was restored by the Ware Society in the 1990s. The Scott's Grotto Trust now manages the site, which charges £2 for adults and offers free admission to children.
