Celebration of 'finest of all cricket writers' John Woodcock
Former England captain Michael Atherton unveiled a plaque in Longparish, Hampshire, commemorating John Woodcock on what would have been the celebrated cricket writer’s 100th birthday. Woodcock served as The Times’ chief cricket correspondent from 1954 to 1987, covered 17 Ashes series, wrote for the newspaper for 66 years and edited Wisden during the 1980s. Friends, family and colleagues praised his wisdom, humour and devotion to cricket, while surplus funds raised for the memorial were donated to Longparish Cricket Club’s youth section.

Big Sister scheme helps teenage girls in the South stick with sport
A programme run by the charity Women in Sport is helping girls aged nine to fifteen stay engaged in physical activity by offering female‑only classes and mentoring. Operating at more than 80 UK sites in partnership with Places Leisure, the scheme provides confidence‑building support led by instructors such as Taliyah Brooks. Participants report improved enjoyment, resilience and willingness to try new activities, with early results showing increased positivity toward sport. The initiative, initially funded through a government tampon tax grant, aims to counter feelings of judgment and inadequacy that commonly drive girls away from exercise.

Protests held over asylum housing plan for Bicester MoD base
Protesters in Bicester voiced opposing views on plans to house 1,250 asylum seekers at a former Ministry of Defence base, with some citing safety concerns while an anti-racism group criticised the accommodation model and called for faster asylum processing. The Home Office stated the facility would provide basic, secure, largely self‑sufficient accommodation with mandatory security checks and long-term use. Other MoD sites are already being used for similar purposes, and Labour has committed to ending reliance on asylum hotels.

Two more men jailed for Henry Nowak Southampton protest violence
Two men received prison sentences for violent disorder during a protest in Southampton following the murder of Henry Nowak, bringing the total sentenced to seventeen. Kevin Reeves was jailed for three years and four months, while Noah Etherington received one year and ten months in a young offender institution. A third man, Tyler Burley, received a suspended sentence. The unrest followed the release of bodycam footage showing police initially arresting Nowak after he was fatally stabbed by Vickrum Digwa, who was later jailed for life. The court heard that the defendants threw various objects at police during the disturbances, which caused significant fear, disruption and financial costs to authorities. An investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct into the police response is ongoing.
