I wanted to throw my newborn on the floor – I feared I'd end up in prison or worse
Steve Sharman developed severe postnatal depression after the traumatic birth of his daughter Florence, experiencing intense anger, thoughts of harming the baby, suicidal thoughts, withdrawal and fear that he might end up in prison or take his own life. Social expectations that fathers should remain emotionally strong, his rapid return to NHS work and the lack of routine screening for paternal perinatal depression contributed to his reluctance to seek help. After confiding in his brother, consulting a GP, taking antidepressants and receiving NHS talking therapy, he found further support through PANDAS. Three years later, he is recovering, supporting other fathers and urging men to speak up earlier about their mental health.

I hate my £8k Love Island face transformation - family don't even recognise me
Brighton bartender Jess Pendrey, 21, says she spent about £8,000 on cosmetic procedures after becoming influenced by social media influencers and Love Island contestants. Her treatments included multiple types of facial filler, Botox, composite bonding, breast augmentation and body contouring. She says the procedures failed to improve her confidence and became an escalating cycle, while online criticism added to the pressure. Jess is now having her lip filler dissolved, pursuing modelling and encouraging young women to think carefully about social-media beauty standards.

Humiliated bride left stranded at altar without a wheelchair ramp to reach her husband
Wheelchair user Jenni Pettican was left unable to reach her husband at the altar when staff at Newland Hall near Chelmsford failed to return a required ramp before her wedding ceremony. Guests and members of the bridal party had to assemble and position it while watching, leaving Pettican humiliated and distressed despite the delay lasting only a few minutes. She also described months of disputes over step-free access and alleged that the venue initially sought a larger deposit because of insurance concerns. Pettican filed a formal complaint but said the venue did not initially accept responsibility or provide compensation. After a change in ownership, Newland Hall apologized for the distress and said it would conduct an accessibility assessment and provide disability-awareness and customer-service training.

Inside illegal trade booming on TikTok - fake cash, drugs and prescription pills
An investigation by filmmaker Sam Tullen found TikTok videos directing users to Telegram groups selling counterfeit banknotes, prescription medication, LSD and cannabis edibles. Sellers reportedly offered large quantities of fake currency, used UK-wide couriers and organised collection points, while one buyer admitted purchasing more than £30,000 in counterfeit notes to fund gambling. Tullen said TikTok removed accounts identified during his investigation, but similar profiles quickly reappeared. The findings coincide with an Ofcom investigation into TikTok's child-safety and age-assurance duties under the Online Safety Act. TikTok said it had banned the accounts and hashtags, while Telegram said its rules prohibit counterfeit sales and that moderators remove such content.

Specialists emphasize the infection’s rarity but warn that prompt diagnosis is critical to prevent irreversible sight loss.

'Motherhood penalty' laid bare - promotion snubs and one in three forced to quit
Research highlights widespread failures in UK parental leave support, with one in three parents leaving jobs due to inadequate flexibility and management practices. Testimonies from affected women describe inconsistent treatment, denied flexible working requests and career setbacks following maternity leave. The LEIA UK report shows most parental experiences depend heavily on individual managers, with minimal organisational tracking or structured support. Cases of successful discrimination claims demonstrate legal consequences for employers. Advocacy groups call for clearer national standards as the government reviews parental leave policies.

Food and medicine chain on the brink as heatwaves push chilled warehouses to limit
Rising temperatures are pushing the UK’s ageing refrigerated warehouse network to operational limits, raising the risk of disruptions to food and temperature‑sensitive medicines. Industry leaders warn that prolonged heatwaves could cause mechanical failures, energy shortages and supply bottlenecks, with some warehouses already denied extra electricity during peak heat. The Cold Chain Federation argues that concentrated storage hubs create national vulnerabilities, including cyber risks. Retailers are investing in upgraded cooling systems, but experts say the pace of climate change is outstripping these improvements. The sector is calling for designation as Critical National Infrastructure to secure priority access to power and emergency planning, while government and energy operators maintain that the electricity system remains resilient despite tighter margins during recent heatwaves.

I thought my deadly skin cancer was an insect bite but NHS AI tech saved me
A woman who mistook a persistent red patch for an insect bite was diagnosed with malignant melanoma after an NHS pathway using Skin Analytics’ AI tool flagged her lesion as suspicious, allowing her to bypass dermatology and receive prompt surgery. With rising skin cancer rates and common delays in seeking help, the technology aims to speed diagnosis by assessing images quickly and routing patients directly into hospital care. The system has been deployed across multiple NHS sites, detecting thousands of cancers, and its developers envision future integration into platforms like the NHS App. The patient credits the AI-assisted process for accelerating her treatment and believes wider adoption could encourage earlier checks and reduce pressure on specialists.

Heatwave 'mutant' bed bug warning as blood-suckers invade UK homes
Bed bug infestations are rising across the UK as heatwaves and increased travel help spread insecticide‑resistant strains. Pest expert Blago Manov warns that modern bugs have evolved to withstand common treatments and frequently hitchhike via luggage, hotels and short‑stay rentals. He advises travellers to inspect rooms and baggage and notes that professional heat‑and‑spray methods are far more effective than shop‑bought products, though costly.
