Why we need to save elephants to save ourselves

01 Oct 2024  |  thehill.com
Cyril Christo and Marie Wilkinson emphasize the critical role of African elephants in humanity's survival, highlighting their sentience and the dangers they face from poaching and habitat encroachment. Their documentary 'Walking Thunder' and book 'Walking Thunder: In the Footsteps of the African Elephant' showcase the majestic lives of elephants and call for urgent conservation efforts. Despite reduced poaching due to increased awareness and anti-poaching measures, elephants still face significant threats from poverty-driven poaching and habitat loss. The couple's next project aims to raise awareness about the declining lion population, with their son Lysander continuing to play a pivotal role in their conservation storytelling.

There is little scrutiny of 'natural' deaths behind bars

01 Oct 2023  |  88.5 WFDD
The article investigates the high rate of 'natural' deaths in federal prisons, revealing that many of these deaths may be due to medical neglect and poor prison conditions. Families of deceased inmates often receive little information, and autopsies are not required unless deemed necessary by the warden. Experts argue that the classification of deaths as 'natural' obscures the role of inadequate medical care. The Bureau of Prisons claims all deaths are thoroughly investigated, but families and advocates call for more transparency and accountability.

Asylum Seekers Betrayed by Broken Promises

01 Jun 2023  |  www.diplomaticourier.com
The article discusses the plight of Vietnamese asylum seekers who attempt to reach Australia by boat. Van Huynh and her family, along with other asylum seekers, faced a harrowing journey and were eventually detained by Australian authorities. Despite assurances from Australia that returnees would not be punished, many, including Huynh's husband, faced detention and imprisonment upon their return to Vietnam. The article highlights the lack of transparency and accountability in the agreements between Australia and Vietnam, and the absence of a monitoring system to ensure the safety of returnees. Human rights organizations and advocates express concern for the asylum seekers' welfare and criticize both governments for violating international law. The piece also touches on the broader issues of human trafficking and the legal definition of refugees.

Kids forced into domestic servitude in Haiti

04 Apr 2019  |  NBC News
The article discusses the plight of 'restaveks', child domestic workers in Haiti, focusing on the story of 15-year-old Evans Antoine. Restaveks, often orphans or children from impoverished rural areas, are sent to work for other families with the promise of food, shelter, and education. However, these children frequently face abuse and neglect. The practice dates back to post-independence Haiti and continues due to extreme poverty and lack of education. The article highlights the efforts of local groups like COSEDERF and international involvement, such as a New Jersey school's initiative to support Haitian education, to address the issue. The piece sheds light on the harsh realities of child labor in Haiti and the challenges in overcoming this entrenched system.

This was the first in a series of videos I led production of for the American Sociological Association. Based on his extensive fieldwork at gun training schools, Harel Shapira, Assistant Professor of Sociology at The University of Texas at Austin, explains how gun owners are socialized to think of guns as tools rather than weapons.

INCREDIBLE ANIMAL JOURNEYS

29 Mar 2019  |  National Geographic
The article discusses the remarkable migratory patterns of various animal species across the globe. It highlights the innate ability of these animals to navigate long distances, surpassing human explorers in their natural instinct to move from one place to another. The migrations cover diverse environments, from the Antarctic to the African savanna and from the Pacific Ocean to Alaska. The journeys are described as being ingrained in the animals, passed down through generations, and showcase the incredible natural phenomena of animal migration.

This film explores the lives of children who, due to economic depravity, are forced to leave their families and abandon their education to work as indentured servants. Child slaves make up about 10 percent of the youth population in Haiti. Driven out of economic depravity, many parents are sending their children to live with others and serve as indentured servants in order to secure their survival. In a short documentary, I reported on the lives of these young children as they are forced to leave their families, sacrifice their education and spend their days working as child slaves.

14 Apr 2014  |  MintPress News
The article discusses the controversy surrounding the August 2013 sarin gas attack in Ghouta, Syria, focusing on investigative reports by Seymour Hersh, who suggests Turkish involvement, and counterarguments by blogger Eliot Higgins, who attributes the attack to Assad's forces. MIT scientists Theodore Postol and Richard Lloyd challenge Higgins' analysis, arguing that the rockets could not have originated from government-controlled areas. The piece also critiques the U.S. government's handling of intelligence and the mainstream media's reluctance to cover Hersh's findings, drawing parallels to past instances of misleading information leading to war.

Tamayo Execution One In A Series Of US Treaty Violations

24 Jan 2014  |  MintPress News
Edgar Tamayo Arias, a Mexican national, was executed in Texas for the murder of Houston police officer Guy Gaddis, despite international calls for a stay due to violations of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations. The U.S. Supreme Court refused to intervene, and the execution was carried out, raising concerns about the U.S.'s adherence to international treaties and the potential risks for Americans abroad. The case is part of a pattern where foreign nationals have not been informed of their rights under the Vienna Convention, leading to international disputes and criticisms of the U.S. legal system's handling of such cases.
