Major update on trains after lineside fire causes week of disruption
Normal passenger and freight train services between Cardiff and Newport are expected to resume on Saturday, 8 August, after a lineside fire near Newport caused extensive damage to signalling equipment, telecommunications systems, overhead power lines and cable infrastructure. Network Rail engineers worked continuously for a week, replacing 11 kilometres of cable and 300 metres of cable troughing while maintaining a reduced service. Transport for Wales and Great Western Railway thanked passengers for their patience and advised travellers to check for residual disruption before travelling.
