Charity Commission

The Charity Commission has opened a statutory inquiry into Wirral-based charity Merseycare Transport Services Ltd over concerns about governance and financial management. Issues include an apparent shortage of trustees, failure to meet statutory accounting requirements and expenditure that may not support the charity’s objectives. The investigation will examine trustee compliance, financial controls, information submitted to the Commission and any misconduct, mismanagement or misuse of charitable funds. The Commission may expand the inquiry and intends to publish a report on its findings and actions.

Research by the Charity Commission shows a quarter of charities have faced hostility stemming from social divisions, including vandalism, threats and reduced support. Some charities report increased support, with those focused on human rights or community harmony most affected. Financial pressure persists but is stabilizing, with fewer charities dipping into reserves and a small minority anticipating closure. Public trust in charities remains high, driven by confidence that funds reach intended causes, though many people cite lack of affordability as the main reason for not donating. The Commission emphasizes the need for strong governance and adherence to charitable purposes to maintain public trust.
