“Significant presence” as New Forest wildfire enters eighth day
Firefighters are continuing to tackle hotspots from a New Forest wildfire on its eighth day after a van caught fire on the A31 on 9 August. The blaze has affected about 1.6 sq km, involved 169 fire appliances from 93 stations, and remains difficult to control because of remote heathland and limited water access. The A31 will stay closed for at least several more days while National Highways undertakes significant repairs, including fencing, resurfacing and vehicle-restraint barrier replacement. Authorities are urging the public to avoid the area and not use anything that could spark further wildfires.
