Century-old Putney gym at risk over rent increase
A historic Putney gym founded in 1928 is struggling to survive after its landlord, Places for London, raised the rent from £26,500 to £41,500 and plans further increases tied to inflation. Owner Chris Quinn says the gym has operated in “survival mode” since the pandemic, facing prolonged closures and additional costs. Despite receiving asset of community value status from Wandsworth Council, the gym argues the proposed rent is still unaffordable for independent businesses. Places for London says it values small businesses and is offering support while seeking reasonable market rates, working with the Greater London Authority to help ensure the gym remains financially viable.
