Great Britain will prohibit manufacturers and importers from placing new cosmetic products containing trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO) on the market from August 15, 2026. The change applies in England, Scotland and Wales and targets the ingredient rather than gel manicures themselves, so customers can continue receiving treatments and salons can use legally obtained existing stock during the transition. Retailers and distributors may sell or supply remaining TPO-containing stock until February 14, 2027, after which its sale or supply will be prohibited. The restriction follows safety classifications linking high-dose ingestion in animal studies to reproductive toxicity, while industry guidance recommends transitioning to TPO-free formulas. Nail-care experts also advise professional removal, regular breaks and daily hydration.
