Man accused of raping teen cheerleader who later died on Louisiana highway faces court
Desmond Carter is due to stand trial on August 17 over allegations that he, Kaivon Washington and Casen Carver raped Louisiana State University student Madison Brooks in a car after drinking with her. The defendants deny rape and say the sex was consensual. Brooks, whose blood-alcohol level was reported as 0.319%, was later left by the vehicle, stumbled into highway traffic and was fatally struck by a truck in 2023. Defence arguments attributing injuries to consensual sex with another student were rejected as irrelevant, while Carter's lawyers have also sought to prevent supporters from wearing Brooks's favourite colour, pink, in court.
