Chienyu Shih is a freelance commentator and journalist based in Taipei, Taiwan. Chienyu Shih is also as an Associate Research Fellow, Division of National Security Research at the Institute for National Defense and Security Research (INDSR), Taiwan. He has taught courses on Politics and International Relations at the National Tsinghua University, Taiwan, University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Chinese University, and Hong Kong Chuhai College for past twenty years. He is assigned to study and follow China’s gray zone warfare towards Taiwan and surrounding areas on the daily basis. His current research mainly focuses on China’s relations with Central Asia and surrounding states, China’s ethnic/frontier policy and politics with particular reference to the Uyghur nationalism in Xinjiang and Islamism. He has been extensively conducted field research on the Uyghur diasporas in Central Asian countries, Turkey, Germany, Japan and the US. He has been serving as a visiting scholar/research fellow at the Chuo University, Japan, in 2008, and Kazakh National University in 2023.
