Plans to Turn Former Roxanne’s and Ruperts Nightclub into 44-Room Guest House Go Before South Tyneside Council
Plans submitted to South Tyneside Council would convert the former Roxanne’s nightclub on Ocean Road, historically the site of Ruperts Disco, into a 44-room guest house. The proposal includes shared management and booking, reception facilities, guest amenities, external alterations and retained ground-floor retail space. Applicants emphasize that the rooms would be for short stays rather than permanent residences, self-contained flats, student accommodation or an HMO, and argue that parking demand can be managed through public transport and nearby car parks. A previous student-accommodation proposal was refused over parking, amenity, privacy and highway-safety concerns. A decision on the new application is expected after consultation.

'Hokey Cokey' Behaviour: Reform UK Chiefs Slammed After Another Shock South Tyneside Council Resignation
Alex Barr, elected for South Tyneside's Primrose ward in May 2026, has resigned from Reform UK and will continue as an independent councillor. The move is the second Reform-related resignation since the local elections, prompting Green, Alliance and Labour councillors to demand greater transparency and question the stability of the new Reform administration. Council leader Paul Mackings says the decision is Barr's responsibility and that Reform remains focused on residents. The council now has 40 Reform councillors, 10 Greens, three independents and one Labour councillor.

Plans submitted to improve nursery facilities at St Mary's Primary
Planning permission has been submitted to expand nursery facilities at St Mary's RC Primary School in Jarrow by converting a covered external area into teaching space. The work would include removing roller shutters, installing brickwork, aluminium windows and doors, and replacing the roof covering. The redesigned area would provide additional nursery space and a cloakroom, with no increase in staff. South Tyneside Council is expected to decide the application after consultation.
