South Tyneside Council Rescinds Climate Emergency Declaration
South Tyneside Council voted 35–11 to rescind its 2019 climate emergency declaration after Reform UK councillors argued that core services, economic growth and cost-of-living pressures should take priority over non-statutory climate targets. The motion also called for a review of policies and spending linked to the declaration while reaffirming support for local environmental services. Green and alliance councillors, backed by environmental campaigners, argued that the decision created a false choice between climate action and good services and cited no evidence that it would save money or improve provision.

South Tyneside local plan approved after years-long struggle
South Tyneside Council approved its local plan by 34 votes to 13, establishing the framework for homes, jobs and infrastructure through 2040 after earlier refusals and government intervention. Supporters said adoption was legally necessary and would enable economic growth, town-centre regeneration and protection of green spaces, while opponents criticized housing proposals affecting green belt land at Fellgate and warned of flood, sewerage, traffic, wildlife, school and healthcare pressures. The plan's approval ends years of delay but leaves significant local opposition to its development and infrastructure implications.

South Tyneside Council rescinds climate emergency declaration
South Tyneside Council voted 35–11 to rescind its 2019 climate emergency declaration after a motion from Reform UK cabinet member Steve Smith. Reform councillors said core services, economic growth and cost-of-living pressures should take priority over non-statutory climate targets, while maintaining commitments to clean streets, recycling, flood protection and other environmental services. Green and South Tyneside Alliance councillors argued the decision created a false choice, questioned whether it would save money, and warned it could weaken the council’s climate response. Environmental campaigners also protested outside South Shields Town Hall.

Hartlepool Council school meal price rise approved
Hartlepool Borough Council approved raising the cost of school meals to £3.43 from September, selecting the lowest of three proposed increases. Around 80% of meals remain free, but about 15 schools will see the new charge. Director of neighbourhoods Kieran Bostock said the change aims to balance affordability with reducing subsidy demands on council taxpayers. Schools had been alerted to potential increases to support budget planning.
