Human rights campaigner from Egypt finds solace in Jersey
An Egyptian human rights lawyer, Maha Attia, who fled persecution and was granted asylum in the UK, found therapeutic relief during a charity-funded visit to Jersey with her daughters. The trip was organised by the Prisoners of Conscience Jersey Holiday Fund with support from the charity Healing Waves. Attia described the island as emotionally restorative after years of pressure linked to her activism on domestic abuse, girls’ education and violence against women in Egypt. Her daughters also expressed gratitude for the safe and welcoming environment. Volunteers highlighted the importance of offering respite to families affected by human rights abuses, while Amnesty International’s assessment of Egypt’s ongoing human rights crisis was noted.
