Darlington and Middlesbrough footballers became war heroes
An exhibition at the Green Howards Museum in Richmond recounts the wartime experiences of footballers connected with Middlesbrough and Darlington. George Malcolm, a Middlesbrough star, served with the Green Howards, survived the First World War, became a prisoner of war, and later captained Darlington to the 1924–25 Division Three North title. By contrast, Douglas Monument signed for Darlington in 1939 but never played for the club after the outbreak of the Second World War, spending years as a prisoner of war. The exhibition also features Donald Bell’s damaged battle bowler and Victoria Cross, alongside a collection of historic Swaledale samplers associated with the Broderick family.
