The rise of contextual journalism, 1950s

24 Jun 2013  |  The Journalist's Resource
Journalism has evolved significantly over the past five decades, with a notable shift towards 'contextual journalism' that emphasizes analysis and interpretation alongside traditional reporting. Researchers Katherine Fink and Michael Schudson from Columbia University conducted a study on this trend, analyzing articles from the New York Times, Washington Post, and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel from 1955 to 2003. They found that contextual reporting grew from under 10% of articles in 1955 to about 40% in 2003, while conventional news stories declined. The study highlights the increasing importance of providing context and interpretation in news articles, though the impact of this shift on public understanding remains to be fully explored.

Crime in immigrant neighborhoods: Evidence from New York City

23 May 2013  |  The Journalist's Resource
Research challenges the stereotype that immigration increases crime, showing that immigrant neighborhoods in New York City experience lower crime rates despite higher enforcement levels. The study disaggregates immigration status from other variables and finds that immigration often correlates with decreased crime rates. Immigrant areas, particularly those with higher concentrations of foreign-born persons of African descent, have lower total and violent crime rates. The findings caution against politically simplistic scapegoating of immigrants and highlight the unsustainability of linking immigration to crime.

The Best Time to Visit Costa Rica

25 Sep 2011  |  TripSavvy
The best time to visit Costa Rica is from late November through April, offering sunny skies and rain-free days, though this is also the high tourism season with higher hotel rates. Climate change has affected weather patterns, making the rainy season less predictable. The rainy season from May through August typically has clear mornings and afternoon rains, while September and October are the rainiest. The dry season is popular among North American tourists escaping winter. The green season from May through mid-November offers fewer tourists and lower rates despite the rain. Various cultural events and holidays occur throughout the year, with specific celebrations in different seasons.
